In 'Paradigm Cabaret' Old Heads Guide Busy Feet

Mr. Solomons's "Three on Three" got things off to a witty start as three practiced vaudevillians (Mr. Solomons, Alice Teirstein and Stuart Hodes) showed that less is often more. So did his "Colds," a coolly minimalist yet affecting trio for Michael Blake, Keith Sabado and Mr. Williams. An excerpt from Richard Move's "Verdi for Three," danced by Mr. Blake, Valda Setterfield and Mr. Williams made sly, surprisingly touching art out of baby sign language performed sparingly.

That Old Magic
Superb performers in their late-days prime stage a cabaret

In Solomons's adagio duet, The Impossible Being of Lightness, James Martin doesn't hoist Susanne Weiss over his head with one arm. In fact he does a lot of pensive soloing to Bach music for unaccompanied cello. Every time Weiss starts to enter, she sees that he's not finished and good humoredly exits again. After she gets a perkier solo turn (with him making periodic appearances), they dance together with pleasant camaraderie. No big deal.

For Paradigm, Carmen de Lavallade's new "Sam's Party," whose title comes from Samuel Beckett's comment that to "dance first, think later" is the "natural order," starts out with a blithe sortie for three women in huge floppy-brimmed hats. Hope Clarke moves like a sly drawl in a trio completed by Ms. de Lavallade and Valda Setterfield.
