Yet the choreography suggested that this piece was an evocation of the physical and emotional struggles that led to the music of the blues.

Alonzo King's Lines Ballet, Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, New York

by HILARY OSTLERE
the Financial Times

The new work, Before the Blues, performed barefoot or in soft ballet slippers, has enlisted saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and musicologist Bernice Johnson Reagon, steeped in early African-American music, ... The Japanese-born Chiharu Shibata dances an enigmatic solo, followed later by the distinguished actor Danny Glover reading (in voiceover) from Isaiah. T

It is a rare dance that quietly, almost without notice, takes on a life of its own and shifts to another plane as it progresses.

I thought the dancers were just stellar, all of soloist level, at least. They look extremely assured in the choreography, with not a false move in sight. An informed local dancer (who knows the LINES dancers) told me afteward this was the forty second time the cast had done this dance..whew, not wonder they looked so polished! The choreoraphy, while certainly virtuosic to me, did not say "blues", at least in the first piece. It looked like contemporary ballet vocabulary turned inside out and upside down, with relatively ethereal costumes for a jazzy, blues piece. The solo sax playing of Pharoah Saunders was indeed virtuosic as well. It was a privelege to have such a great legendary artist appear in concert with LINES! :p

A positive review from the company's home season that also asks some questions:

It's inevitable at a Lines Ballet performance: that moment when you wonder, what planet am I on? more

A wonderful article by Rachel Howard that gives some insight into how the company auditions for the school:

The San Francisco Dance Center has a peculiar grandeur, though not the spit-shined kind you might expect of the West Coast's largest center for dance. more
