Festival hopes for another record

A BALLET with no soundtrack is being touted as one of the highlights of next year’s Edinburgh International Festival.

Joe is the signature piece of the late Canadian choreographer Jean-Pierre Perreault. The ‘music’ consists of the thunderous, drumming footfalls of its 32 dancers, but it has achieved cult status since it was first performed 20 years ago.

Taking steps toward equality

MAKE a note now, and circle it in red when you hang up your 2004 calendar: next year's Edinburgh International Festival dates are August 15 to September 4. The advance details that have so far slipped out into the public domain suggest that dance enthusiasts are in for a plethora of treats.

It includes Akram Khan, whose inspired mix of classical Kathak and contemporary dance movement has made him a hot ticket worldwide – he's just back from New York, laden with praise for his first full-scale piece, Kaash. Audiences who saw the work at Tramway will be marking time until the EIF box office opens (on April 17).
