In his cartooning days Jules Feiffer would portray the butterfly fecklessness of his urban neurotics by having them devise dances to their vague emotional or intellectual weathers. It is in this sense that Alma Guillermoprieto titles her book about a young New Yorker... | more

The oftentimes inexplicable dalliance of the world's intellectuals with Cuba's 45-year-old repressive regime lies at the heart of Alma Guillermoprieto's Dancing With Cuba: A Memoir of the Revolution. | more |

With only a small number of very fine books, Alma Guillermoprieto has evolved as one of our best literary reporters, with a special talent for penetrating the troubled inner life of her favorite subject, Latin America. | more |

In 1969, Merce Cunningham offered to recommend his 20-year-old dance student Alma Guillermoprieto for a teaching job at the state-run National Schools of the Arts in Havana. For thousands of young people, caught up in the radical politics of the era, that would have seemed the opportunity of a lifetime, but ... | more |

Flirting With Fidel:Dance, Suffering, Revolution
Dancing with Cuba: A Memoir of the Revolution, by Alma Guillermoprieto. Pantheon, 250 pages, $25.
by Doris Lessing for The New York Observer
Few dancers write memoirs, and so the world of dance remains an elegant mystery to many of us, despite lovelorn films like Red Shoes or reverential ones like the Margot Fonteyn series. A recent review of Robert Altman’s The Company, in The New York Review of Books, insists on the anti-romantic view of dancers, who are not to be seen as moths dying ecstatically in the flame of their art, but more like 9-to-5 office workers plodding through their duties. No blood-soaked ballet shoes, please, no tortured insteps.

Burdsall lived through Castro's revolution — very close, in fact, to its epicenter; Guillermoprieto, puzzled and fascinated, underwent a personal revolution while trying to fathom the complex links between those brave days in Cuba's past and the Cuba she encountered. | more |
