IF you were trying to predict the next fitness fad, ballroom dancing would probably be languishing somewhere behind the hula hoop and catching and throwing medicine balls. Its image of sequinned frocks, fixed smiles and even more rigid hairdos, just doesn’t seem like a potential way to feel and look good.
Yet it seems you’d be wrong. For every week, more than half a million people have a ball learning to step in time to music and the numbers are growing - so it’s no surprise that BBC bosses have commissioned a new series of the ballroom competition Come Dancing.
It seems that, bored with the treadmill and intimidated by weight training, a growing number of people have been taking up dancing in all its forms, including ballroom, as a more fun way to exercise.
