Ballet: Another Swede takes charge

Scandinavians seem to be everywhere at the moment, but for Matz Skoog, returning to English National Ballet as artistic director is like coming home.

Matz Skoog is Swedish, smallish, spruce and quiet, with a civil-servant's steel-rimmed spectacles and a pleasant round face only slightly pudgier since his dancing days. As English National Ballet's incoming artistic director, he is the antithesis of his predecessor, Derek Deane, the tall, confident loud-mouth whose controversial sound-bites kept the company in the news.

I should congratulate Skoog on his appointment, except that I have this mental image of a man stepping through a door into a giant blazing furnace.
