Hip-hop hooray - "Da Boyz"
By Dan Cairns for The Sunday Times
It is an accident both unfortunate and happy that two musical adaptations of a Shakespeare comedy should open in London in the same week: comparison is inevitable, though not at all instructive. Both are, by chance, hip-hop updates of that tale of twins, double take and discord, The Comedy of Errors. But the shows have different aims and spring from different circumstances. In the East End, Da Boyz (Theatre Royal, Stratford East) is the result of three years’ workshopping at a theatre that draws its resources and inspiration from the community it serves. DJ Excalibah, Mc Skolla and the director/designer, Ultz, have used songs from Rodgers and Hart’s 1938 musical, The Boys from Syracuse, as the source for a raucous evening that makes up in enthusiasm and energy what it lacks in polish and dramatic consistency. click for more
