Official statement from White Oak Dance Project

Various rumours have been circulating regarding Mikhail Baryshnikov, following an article by Jochum Schmidt, headed "Mikhail Baryshnikov retires" in the magazine Ballettanz. In response to our enquiry, Christina Sterner, White Oak's General Manager, has written the following, which she has asked us to publicise:

Dear Stuart Sweeney,

Thank you for getting in touch with me to question the veracity of the
statements that are attributable to Mr. Schmidt's recent report.

Let me set the record straight:

1. Mr. Baryshnikov is NOT retiring. In fact he has more projects now then ever - performing, producing new work, etc.

2. White Oak Dance Project will be suspending operation in 2003 and is officially on hiatus while Baryshnikov focuses on other
projects.

3. As far as the Venice Biennale, he has been asked by the Biennale to be the Artistic Director of the dance section of the Biennale for 2004. He has NOT accepted nor has he declined. We are simply in preliminary talks,
contrary to what has been reported in the Italian press and apparently by the Biennale itself. Refer to the La Stampa article dated November 2, 2002 by Sergio Trombetta, where Baryshnikov refutes the press reports on this.

I appreciate your caution in spreading rumors, and I ask your assistance in communicating the truth.
