One of my favorite ...
Quote from Robert Edmund Jones

"We use light as we use words to elucidate ideas and emotions. Does this mean that we carry images of poetry and vision and high passion in our minds while we are shouting out orders to electricians on ladders? Yes." --Robert Edmund Jones

[This message has been edited by Bee Bee (edited August 24, 2000).]

OK. One last joke. . . .
Bob, the last-chair violist for the Smalltown Symphony Orchestra, was walking along the beach one day when he spotted an old, tarnished brass lamp. He picked it up, rubbed it with his sleeve, and -- you guessed it -- a genie appeared and offerred him 3 wishes.
Well, Bob was an artist and every artist wants to be even better than s/he is, so he said, "I want to be a better musician."
POOF!
Bob was first-chair viola player for the Smalltown Symphony Orchestra, playing better than he'd ever played before.
. . .But, being an artist, he wanted to be even bettwer, so he said, "I want to be an even better violist."
POOF!
He became the first-chair viola player for the Berlin Philharmonic. This was really great -- he was playing better than he'd ever dreamed.
. . .But, being an artist, etc., etc. . . .he said, ""I want to be a still better musician."
POOF!
Bob was last chair violinist for the Smalltown Symphony Orchestra. . . .

[This message has been edited by salzberg (edited August 27, 2000).]

Quote:
Viola players are used to all this stuff. Today they perform to the same standards as other instrumentalists, but there was a time when this instrument, which has few solo parts, only attracted less gifted performers.
They're not alone. the term "baritone" came from the phrase, "barren of tone," I'm told.
