Should people like parents,personal hairstylist,spouses/partners and interviewers(except OUR AZLAN of course)not be backstage w/dancers???

It all depends ("Jeff, can't you give an absolute anwser to anything?").

When are we talking about? Before the performance? Some dancers prefer to be alone and undistracted while waiting to perform (and, remember, even people visiting other dancers can be a distraction).

During the performance? Uh uh. No. way. Not ever.

After the performance? Again, It depends on the dancer;Some are simply drained and don't want to see anybody; others are highly energized. Each situation is different.

Boy, Angela, you know how to bring up subjects, don't you?<P>I have to say that this is one of my pet peeves. There are too many people who just don't understand what a mob scene they create when they hang about backstage after a show. Having to strike down is difficult as it is. People are tired and they want to go home. Sometimes dancers want to see their loved ones but groupie friends prevent it.<P>Yes, dancers love feedback and they crave adulation but give them time and space, and understand if they can't see you.

Actually, let me clarify this a little. Groupie friends are usually respectful and not that bad. It's the VIPs (donors, board members, dignitaries, etc.) who sometimes don't have a clue.

Let me clarify: if there is anyone who wants to be the groupie of a bald, middle-aged, overweight lighting designer, I'd be <I>glad</I> to have you come backstage!

I had dressing room rules when I was a wardrobe supervisor. <P>No one not associated with the production (i.e. crew, cast) backstage after half-hour call.<P>No one not associated with the production anywhere near the dressing rooms after the performance until everyone was out of costume and in their street clothes.<P>This worked out very well. It seemed to get everyone what they wanted or needed. I was ruthless, too. I even made the Artistic Director of the SF Opera wait.

When we had a green room (it was a tour, we didn't always) we would let people wait there as long as they didin't get in the way of the crew trying to strike. That was also a good compromise, when we could make it work.

It's still amazing that people who ARE allowed backstage still manage to be deaf when there are stagehands trying to carry scenery through and yelling, "Clear the hall, please, COMING THROUGH...." etc...I had to actually bump and push people out of my way this summer on every strike they had. <P>And this with a door man at the stagedoor. Sheesh!
