Stravinsky: The Firebird; The Rite of Spring
Cleveland Orchestra/Boulez. A reissued recording reviewed by Andrew Clements for The Guardian

Unquestionably the biggest bargain, though, is the Stravinsky disc with its coupling of the complete Firebird ballet and The Rite of Spring that crams 80 minutes of music on to the disc. That is remarkable enough, but Pierre Boulez's performances of both works with the Cleveland Orchestra are wonderfully lucid, exemplary in every way, which should be in every collection, whether basic or not.

I wonder whether the picture of the diver on the cover is supposed to represent the Firebird or The Rite of Spring? (Maybe the swimming pool is empty and it's the Sacrificial Diver.)

Hilary Hahn's CD of the Brahms and Stravinsky violin concerti won the Grammy for best instrumental soloist with orchestra, and deservedly so.

For those used to the NYCB performance of the Stravinsky violin concerto, Hahn's version is much faster in the first and last movements (which she claims is truer to the score). It's highly articulated, very clean playing, and sounds like effortless chamber music. Despite the speed, her tone is very pure and focused, and though it's not conveyed well on this recording, in live performance, she can draw a very wide range of colors from her instrument. She mentions the Balanchine choreography briefly in her liner notes for the CD.

Hahn has really astounding technique, perhaps best demonstrated by the third movement of her recording of Barber's violin concerto. The tempi are so fast, that the last movement of the Barber becomes almost pointillistic in effect, with instruments popping in and out of the background, and is altogether a different conception than anything else out there.
