Dance floors

Do places like opera houses and certain theaters have to redo the floors specifically for dancers(provide a srung floor for example).What company is good(Harlequin???I cant think of the other suppliers right now)

Last week, the dance floor in one of our studios disappeared. I discovered that Mark Morris company was in town, and that they were using our floor --- I presume, at the theater.Our floors our specially designed and made by <A HREF="http://www.woodenkiwi.com/" TARGET=_blank>Wooden Kiwi Productions</A>. They have installed many floors in Boston, and they also make a touring floor.

When the San Diego Civic Theater was first built in the 1970's the floor was constructed without any thought for dance. Eventually many major companies wouldn't come to dance at the theater because of that floor.At great expense the floor was completely redone so that I believe (as I heard) it is a sprung floor. However, when dance is being performed an additional layer is placed on top (from what I also have been told) so that it is a non-slip surface. That surface is removed for non-dance performances.

Harlequin and Rosco are leading suppliers of floor coverings. These coverings, even the expensive padded ones, do not (and cannot) take the place of a properly designed sprung sub-floor.

To clarify my post: Wooden Kiwi made our sprung sub-floors. I don't know where our surface came from.

When ABT has their season at the Met they construct a sprung floor over the main floor. The regular floor at the Met has lifts and turntables that are horrible even with Marley over them. I was always so envious of the smooth surface.

The SFB does the same thing. They build a sprung floor over the Opera House stage.

Very cool. It would have been cooler if the engineers had remembered that certain materials expand and contract with changes in climate, especially in cities like Houston.So...$1,000,000 later....

Oh no. Isn't that typical. Why is it that engineers spend all this time in school learning to do what they do, and then they forget simple things that us non-engineers would think of right away?

For everyone, it's important to listen to others and hear what they have to say. It's easy to believe you can skip that process if you're highly educated in a field.

The Kennedy Center also puts down a portable sprung floor. Several years ago it was the L'Air product///don't know if it still is. We did a day trip down there when we were considering purchasing it for a new studio.
