Former American Ballet Theatre soloist Rebecca Wright will be the new director of the Washington School of Ballet, the organization is expected to announce today. Wright succeeds the school's founder, Mary Day, who retires this summer.
In August, Wright, 56, will take over a Washington institution that has national stature as a leading training ground for ballet. Since it opened in 1944, the school has groomed dancers for professional careers with the Washington Ballet and dance companies around the world. Several alumni have attained stardom at American Ballet Theatre, among them ballerina Amanda McKerrow and ABT Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie.
