Tap show coming to the Elsinore
Derick Grant’s “One Night Out: TAP” deals with communication in the tap world.
BY RON COWAN for The Statesman Journal (Oregon)

Derick Grant wants to treat us to tap but tackle an issue at the same time with “One Night Out: TAP.”

The tap show this Saturday, which is the second subscription series program at the Historic Elsinore Theatre, is kind of a brave new adventure for tap and Salem.

“I’m just curious how people receive it,” said Grant, the show’s director/choreographer. “It’s kind of an experiment for myself.

Grant, a star and dance captain for Broadway’s successful “Bring in ’Da Noise, Bring in ’Da Funk” with Savion Glover, is only 29 but finds himself a bridge between new school and old school tap, an issue he tacks on with this new show that just recently took to the road.

When students enrol at Miss Calamity Jane's Glamour Puss Studios Tap Dancing Academy, not only do they learn to tap in a particular style - a kind of hybrid Partridge Family meets the Tap Dogs, but they are also encouraged to embrace their leader's glitzy lifestyle. Miss Jane says her hot-pink studio is an oasis of glamour, a little piece of Las Vegas in St Kilda. The academy is strictly a leotard-free zone.

Like most schools, all students are required to adopt certain etiquette. They are to address one another in a particular manner. David Helms, a town planner by day, is Mr David, the Tapping Cowpoke and choreographer by night. Sergeant Helen Murray casts off her role as an instructor at the Melbourne Police Academy and becomes Miss Helen of the Swinging Chandeliers.

Tap lessons let seniors show off fancy footwork. By Nicole Gainey / The Detroit News

Molly Russell's doctor didn't believe she had been tap dancing for more than a decade.

So the smallish 71-year-old got off the examining table, put on her tap shoes and danced for the office staff.

"He's used to older people coming into the office shaking, barely being able to walk and complaining about what's wrong with them," Russell said. "I tapped for him and he was surprised -- just like most people are, especially the younger people."

Russell is one of about 35 senior citizens who spend an hour each week in the senior tap class at Ridgewood Recreation Center in Warren.

Dancer revels in rhythm of tapping
Tanya Goodwin presents a program on the history of tap dancing today at the Palm Harbor Library.

PALM HARBOR -- During the day, Dr. Tanya Goodwin treats patients at her Palm Harbor gynecology practice.

But at night, she trades in her white lab coat and stethoscope for a black leotard and a pair of black tap dance shoes.

Then she heads to her Clearwater dance studio, Rhythm Works, to teach students of all ages the art of tap dance.

"It's not a hobby," Goodwin said. "It's a passion. I'm dedicated to promoting tap dance. I've been doing this for more than eight years, and I'll do this the rest of my life."

Blackhawk teen taps her way up

BLACKHAWK resident Amanda Pierce has 51 national tap dancing titles and just carried away her first international award, a colossal, 25-pound crystal cup from Italy where she beat more than 700 performers from 17 countries for the coveted "Prix d'Italia" award.
Not bad for a 13-year-old.

"When I'm onstage, I feel like it's where I belong," says the mature eighth-grader, a tall, perfectly poised brunette. "I don't ever want to quit dancing -- there's nothing else I want to do."

And it's been that way since she was a tiny tapper -- Amanda started dancing at age 3. Her parents, Russ and Sylvia, signed her up for tap classes to keep her busy while they were working.
