DANCE REVIEW
Quote:
One expects Cuban dance to sizzle, but Lizt Alfonso's Dance Cuba merely simmered during its Austin premiere Tuesday night at Bass Concert Hall. Eighteen gorgeous young women graced the stage in a series of ensemble dances, mostly flamenco-based and softened by an infusion of ballet and Afro-Cuban moves.
In the opening "Malagueña," with castanets clattering and feet stamping, the rapid-fire machine-gun staccato of flamenco was replaced by more delicate heelwork, the emphasis placed instead on curving torsos and sinuous arms.
