Michael Flatley has made millions from his dance spectaculars. His latest moneyspinner takes him to Beirut, where Jan Moir meets him

A full moon hangs low in the sky over Lebanon, gleaming over the haunting, ancient Roman site of Baalbek, where people once gathered to worship the gods Jupiter, Venus and Mercury. Tonight, the crowds have come for a different reason. They have come to see Lord of the Dance, the jig-a-jig, rat-tat-tat Irish spectacular that is being staged here as part of an arts festival. For a moment I thought one of the make-up artists had lost the plot after listening to one too many boom-a-lang-a-langs, downed a bottle of Lambrusco and thought, "F*** it! I’ll give it a lash." But wait! Onion boy Michael Flatley was not alone.
