This is what the young Israeli choreographer Noa Wertheim has done -- with the help of seven dancers and a stunning video decor -- in Esther. Wertheim and her husband, Adi Sha'al, are the founders of Jerusalem's Vertigo Dance Company, which made its American debut Saturday at the Jewish Community Center. It was a climactic ending to Dance Month at the Kaplan, with a full house that included an entourage from the Israeli consulate.

They sound like a fun company. It's a shame that their name is so close to the internationally known Montreal company - O Vertigo Danse.

Cool!
You guys, I'm from Jerusalem, I know some of the dancers from Vertigo and planning on trying out for it, myself. They're a GREAT group and they've got great dancers, and I was so surprised and happy to see this thread!
Thanks,
Yaeli.
------------------
-- Immerse your soul in Love

A decade of Vertigo Dance Company
By JENNY HAZAN for The Jerusalem Post

When Noa Wertheim and Adi Sha'al met at the Jerusalem Tamar Dance Company in 1986, it was love at first sight.

"We were both new to the company," remembers Wertheim.

"We met in the studio, where the choreographer and the dancers were practicing huge jumps over each other's shoulders. I looked at him and he looked at me. We didn't say a word to each other, but when we danced together, the physical chemistry was very interesting. We seemed to understand each other's movements immediately."

VERTIGO. It's the sensation of falling, even when two feet remain firmly planted on the ground. It's the disconcerting and very real feeling of being off balance. It's also the moniker a Jerusalem-based dance company chose to represent both physical instability and the precariousness of emotional situations that the company mines in its bold and highly adept choreography.

Getting Dirty, Hoping for Rebirth
by CLAUDIA LA ROCCO for the New York Times

The program notes urged the audience to "become part of this womblike setting," but "Birth of the Phoenix" never went far enough in any direction to command the space. One must have something to hold onto in order to connect to one's environment.
