Venue affects troupe's high level of artistry, technique

by WILMA SALISBURY
the Cleveland Plain Dealer

While concerts of jazz and symphonic music attract capacity crowds to the Metro Campus, local dance organizations have rarely drawn full houses. New GroundWorks Dancetheater piece is about opening doors
by WILMA SALISBURY for the Cleveland Plain Dealer

"I knew when we put it on wheels that it would define the space," Shimotakahara said. "I thought of the stage as different areas. Each sequence takes place in a different space or room. It's not only physical space. It's also about stepping from the external world to the internal world."

By WILMA SALISBURY
The Cleveland Plain Dealer

Set to five tracks from "African Voices: Songs of Life," the high-energy celebration incorporates traditional African movement without emulating authentic steps. The swaying hips, crouched bodies, open arms and weighty dynamics of African dance are adapted to the lightness and grace of accomplished, ballet-trained dancers.

'Iron Lung' choreographer breathes dance
by WILMA SALISBURY for the Cleveland Plain Dealer

The first time David Shimotakahara saw Keely Garfield perform her choreography, he knew he wanted her to create a piece for his ballet-trained company, GroundWorks Dancetheater.

"It was an intense duet, full of details," he said. "There's a different physicality in her work. Most of it is autobiographical."

Born and raised in England, Garfield has lived in New York City since 1986, and she became an American citizen after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
