"A collaborative effort between well-known American choreographers -- David Parsons, Moses Pendleton and Daniel Ezralow -- and the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, Aeros defies gravity and aesthetic pigeonholing. The performance originally was designed for an ad campaign for hair products in Italy. The concept took flight, if you will, and Aeros was born."
Read the rest of this review online at: http://www.adn.com/lifestyles/story/0,2649,202843,00.html

Very interesting, given Pendleton's affinity with gymnastic elements in dance. Perhaps the lack of success goes back to the artistic expression thing or the lack of it in the super-talented Romanians.
In passing I note that the critic, Anne Herman, says at the bottom:
'Anne Herman has a master's degree in dance.'
[This message has been edited by Stuart Sweeney (edited October 13, 2000).]

That is usually all it says at the end of her reviews, and I do not know where her degree is from. I have not seen her perform though I took a pleasant modern dance class from her years ago.

This is an article from the Philadelphia Inquirer - about Daniel Ezralow choreographing something a bit different for Christmas:
Xmas Philes

Los Angeles Times review by dance critic Lewis Segal:

AEROS GYMNASTICS IMPRESS, BUT LACK DRAMATIC IMPACT

quote:
Ballet and modern dance have borrowed technical fireworks from gymnastics for so long that replacing dancers with gymnasts might seem overdue--a chance for audiences to experience nonstop bravura with no artsy padding. Alas, I didn't make it to AEROS' performances at Cal Performances/Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley (Michael, contrary to common wisdom, I don't go to every performance in the Bay Area). And neither did my trusty local dance critic companions. So, I wonder if we will get a decent review...
However, I did hear that the shows sold out, which is good news for dance.

We do have a review after all that's not all that bad:

quote:
Dance Meets Sport In Breathtaking Aeros
Romanian gymnasts take flight in hybrid show
Octavio Roca, SF Chronicle
Alot can be said about Aeros, above all that it works. This explosive fusion of gymnastics and modern dance landed on the Zellerbach Hall stage Saturday night, bringing just the sort of thing art hopes for and seldom achieves: surprise.

More

And another review:

quote:
Gymnasts can't keep `Aeros' from falling flat
BY ANITA AMIRREZVANI, San Jose Mercury News
It sounded like a great idea. From the Los Angeles Times review by Lewis Segal:
STRETCHING THE LIMITS OF DANCE THEATER

Image

quote:
The three are all dancer-choreographers descended from the athletic experiments of Pilobolus or Momix or the Paul Taylor Dance Company, where they were founders or members. They have joined forces with 19 members of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation in another example of the "Riverdance" phenomenon, the melding of mass entertainment values--and in this case, the values of sport--with concert choreography.

<A HREF="http://www.calendarlive.com/top/1,1419,L-LATimes-Search-X!ArticleDetail-18340,00.html?" A review from Kansas City:

quote:
Flights of fancy
Paul Horsley, The Kansas City Star
These days the lines separating dance, acrobatics and gymnastics have become blurred. Anyone who has watched a program of modern dance knows athletic skills of Olympic proportions are often involved, just as parallel-bar fans know there is balletic art in gymnastics.

More

From the Chicago Sun Times:
'AEROS' GYMNASTS SOAR

quote:
"AEROS," the new spectacle of high-impact physical theater and athletic prowess, made its Chicago debut Friday night with a single performance at the Chicago Theatre. And it was easy to see why three of the most ingenious contemporary choreographers--Daniel Ezralow, Moses Pendleton and David Parsons--jumped at the opportunity to work on this project, which involves 20 athletes from the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

From Boston:

quote:
Aeros blends athletic precision with artistic expression
Vicki Sanders, Boston Herald
In the world of gymnastics, an athlete trains for an entire year to compete for two precious minutes in front of a panel of judges.
In Aeros, a hybrid spectacle of artistry and athleticism being presented by the FleetBoston Celebrity Series Thursday through Saturday, the gymnast-performers prepared only three months for a 36-week tour in which they must perform nightly and practically nonstop for almost two hours. They also are executing movements and working in groupings that break almost all the formal rules of competition they've followed since childhood.

More

A very interesting revelation:

quote:
An Artistic Leap

Lisa Traiger, Washington Post
IT started with shampoo.
He doesn't like to dwell on it, but it was thanks to Pantene that choreographer Daniel Ezralow joined with dancemakers Moses Pendleton and David Parsons to create a spectacular production for 15 members of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation to mark the launch of a new hair care product.

More

From the New York Times:
How it all started.........
Everything Is Danceable?
