The tutu is a useful psychological stopgap for designers. For many women, it instantly revives happy memories of ballet classes as a little girl, while also conveying a feeling of glamour and grace associated with prima ballerinas at their most ethereal. It is equally useful for designers in practical terms: net is one of the cheapest fabrics, easily cut and layered to spectacular effect, and it behaves just as well on the catwalk as in front of the cameras.
