Blingin' in the rain

by STEPHEN BROOK
the Guardian

This is your first chance to see one of the most iconic scenes in the history of cinema metamorphosed into a TV advert - Gene Kelly rapping and breakdancing to a club-mix of Singin' in the Rain.

I've seen this ad and my first thought was to ask how much they had to pay for the rights to the "Singing in the Rain" sequence - plenty, I'll be bound.

The Woodie Allen film "Play it Again, Sam" used a short sequence from "Casablanca" and paid a pile of money for 2 minutes from the original movie.

The track by the group Mint Royale is set to be released as a CD single after a record deal is signed this week. The song could be in record shops and on dancefloors by late May.

The hard sell
by BEN MARSHALL for the Guardian

Now that Singing In The Rain is destined to be blasted out in every pub and club in the country it will surely inspire some Clockwork Orange moments as the nation's underage drinkers use Gene Kelly high kicks to defend the honour of their pint.

The use of cgi with "Singing in the Rain" is an interesting one, but the actual dance is disappointing in m view. So much so that I wonder if a choreographer was involved.

The one I always enjoy is for a new Citroen car - love that street dancin' robot. You can access the ad from here:

An ad for the new Ford 500 sedan (saloon for our Euro readers) uses the Rose Adagio to accompany sequences of the car doing controlled spins down wet city streets, touting the car's all-wheel drive features. It was surprisingly appropriate music for those who know ballet. Too bad the car is so mind-numbingly dull.

When that "Rose Adagio" car commercial comes on I just close my eyes and imagine Margot Fonteyn.
