The shoes are OFF in a toe-to-toe no holds barred dance-off to see just who has the best Cinderella in Canada! You can add
Ballet Jörgen to the NBoC and RWB in revised Cinderella creations. Michael Crabb was very impressed declaring the tiny company that could as presenting
“A Classic Refreshed!” Unfortunately, it is only available for National Post subscribers. The highlights will not please lovers (Stuart Sweeney) of the score:
Quote:
“Like most Cinderella ballets, Jörgen’s is choreographed to Sergei Prokofiev’s problematic 1945 score; problematic because the composer’s dissonances and often sardonic tone do not always jell with the fairy-tale sweetness of the story. Jörgen largely circumvents the problem by playing to the score’s ironic qualities where appropriate, while taking full advantage of it’s more lyrically compelling and romantic moments.”
What can I write but it is reassuring that a fellow great mind agrees with Michael Goldbarth’s impression of the score:
Quote:
“Dance Maestro James Kudelka almost choreographed the impossible-camouflaging a Prokofiev musical score far too sardonic for a fairy tale ballet through innovative steps, stunning costumes, eye-opening lighting, and a down to earth set. This production of Cinderella was choreographed with wow and hearty guffaws galore! The ballet still cries out to be scored anew but this version is more than acceptable. This is a Cinderella that will tour Canada-and maybe just maybe the world!
… Now, if only Kudelka could raise the funds to rewrite the score? Perhaps, Cinderella will be scored anew with a gelling of jazz á la Michel Legrand with classical music.”
Michael Crabb goes on to reveal that this Cinderella contains an interesting twist:
Quote:
“Rather than promising to be home by midnight, Cinderella must avoid being kissed in order not to be exposed as who she really is.
Naturally, with as pretty and vivacious a Cinderella as 10-year Ballet Jörgen veteran Tara Butler, it is hardly surprising that her prince, the lanky former Royal Winnipeg now Ohio Ballet member Toby George, cannot resist lip contact.”
MMMmmmmmmmmmm! That certainly was a delicious review.
