NEW YORK CITY BALLET MOVES
A new performance group featuring NYCB dancers and musicians
Peter Martins has announced that NYCB are to launch a new small-scale performance group called New York City Ballet Moves during summer 2011.
Clearly with an eye on overseas touring and festival dates, the intention is that the group will showcase the company, its dancers and repertory in venues that might not be able to present the full company for financial or technical reasons.
The dancers will be drawn from the existing company roster, although they will be rotated. Martins emphasises that the group will be made up of a mix of principals, soloists, and members of the NYCB corps. This is not to be a second company or training group for students or apprentices.
The initial roster of dancers will feature Principals Jared Angle, Joaquin De Luz, Robert Fairchild, Sterling Hyltin, Maria Kowroski, Tiler Peck, Amar Ramasar, Daniel Ulbricht and Wendy Whelan; with Soloists Adrian Danchig-Waring, Erica Pereira, and Rebecca Krohn; and corps de ballet members Chase Finlay, Anthony Huxley, Lauren Lovette, Brittany Pollack, and Taylor Stanley.
The ballets danced will come from the company’s regular repertory, and will be performed to live music played by instrumentalists, primarily from the New York City Ballet Orchestra. In addition, on occasion new work may also be commissioned specifically for this group.
The repertory for the first season is to include Balanchine’s “Duo Concertant,” Robbins’ “Dances at a Gathering”, Martins’ “A Fool for You,” “Hallelujah Junction” and “Zakouski,” and Wheeldon’s “After the Rain” pas de deux, and “Polyphonia.”
The launch of the group follows the successful week-long residency by 17 NYCB dancers and musicians at the Center for the Arts in Jackson, Wyoming in summer 2010. That engagement was a huge success with three sold-out performances plus master classes and open rehearsals.
According to NYCB Executive Director Kathy Brown, NYCB Moves will seek engagements in the US and overseas during times when the full company is not rehearsing or performing.
New York City Ballet Moves will make its formal debut at the Vail International Arts Festival from July 31 to August 2. The first two performances will be at Vail’s Ford Amphitheater. On August 2 the group move to the Vilar Auditorium where they will present a one-off program called “The Male Dancer – By Balanchine,” which will feature more than one dozen male solos from such Balanchine classics as "Apollo", "Prodigal Son", "Square Dance", "Theme and Variation"s, "Agon", and "Harlequinade".
The Vail dates are followed immediately by performances in Jackson, Wyoming (August 5 to 7).
