I received this postcard from Smuin Ballet promoting their Spring season -- the caption on the right side of the front reads "BALLET BUT SEXY," a phrase repeated more clearly on the back:

It is an interesting design.

"But" sexy?

"But" is a conjunction used to connect two usually-contradictory states.

Since when is ballet not sexy?

Yes... You're right, salzberg. This is what was bothering me about the ad! It should read, "And"!

To see all of the other posters in this campaign:

http://adsoftheworld.com/media/outdoor/smuin_ballet_company_ballet_but_sexy

And click through to the other ads. I found "Ballet but entertaining" especially insulting. They apparently spent quite a bit of money on this campaign, and I believe the ad agency doesn't know much about dance, which is obvious given how they promote it.

These posters are up all over SF --- it's a very wide distribution.

The campaign fits in with Smuin Ballet's Ballet-for-the-masses mission.

I can see where Ballet fanatics would find it a bit harsh, for me, I have a very harsh sense of humor so I actually find the statement "Ballet but entertaining" very amusing. I would hate to say it but from a marketing prospective it does in fact address the number one complaint I usually hear from people whom I would consider the "general public". To each their own though.

BTW, whoever is a mod, Google Chrome is not liking Critical Dance. Just an FYI.

I also think the campaign is quite amusing, but I also have a rather harsh sense of humor.

I'll look into the the Chrome issue.

I don't mind the concept, but find the pictures very uninspiring. They look messy to me, and frankly the "sexy" one is very unsexy. I could thing of many images from ballets that are far more sexy than the collagey thing.

To give them credit, they are trying to rise above the Broadway-disguised-as-ballet genre by bringing in new work, and they do have very capable dancers. For example, they're doing Kylian's Petite Mort this season, and that costs $$$.
