Terry Teachout offers some advice in the Wall Street Journal:

Quote:
Clap and Be Damned
Applause—the good, the bad and the timely

Rare is the performing artist who turns up his nose at the reassuring sound of applause—even when it comes at an inopportune moment. But I know a fair number of anxious audience members who live in fear of clapping at the wrong time, as well as others who believe that when it comes to expressing approval of a performance, silence is golden.

Interesting article. I suppose for someone who does not often go to live performances, the eccentricities of the audiences for each individual form could be very confusing and intimidating.

Nothing excuses an audience leaving without clapping at all at the end, however.
