Modern Dance's Cabinetmaker

"Pentimento," a loosely autobiographical tribute to a 35-year career that has played itself out on makeshift platforms, Broadway stages, opera houses, film and even ice rinks.

Lubovitch Celebrates 35 Years of Dance
By CLAUDIA LA ROCCO from 620ktar

Lar Lubovitch has choreographed everywhere from Broadway to Carnegie Hall to Olympic skating rinks. For his 35th anniversary, he's chosen a church.

"Pentimento" opened this week at the intimate Washington Square United Methodist Church, using sheer black scrims to make several spaces out of one. As suggested by the title, which describes a process in which previous paintings show through a canvas' present image, Lubovitch's dance plays with time and memory to create a layered effect, as when echoes overlap.

Marking a Company Anniversary With Layers of Style and Sound

By ANNA KISSELGOFF
The New York Times
May 14, 2004

Lar Lubovitch played himself as an internationally known choreographer in "The Company," Robert Altman's recent film inspired by the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. At home in major ballet companies, on Broadway and with his modern-dance troupe in unconventional performing spaces, he is now pouring whirlpools and waves of passionate movement into his new "Pentimento."

ARTS: Pentimento/Lar Lubovitch Washington Square Methodist Church, New York

Lubovitch can be infuriatingly perverse. Inventive one moment, skilled at unravelling tangled groups into harmony and writhing couples into swooning embraces, he can also be insufferably obscure and long-winded.

Layers Within Layers

Lar Lubovitch actually calls his new work Pentimento, but although it celebrates the 35th anniversary of the company he no longer exactly has, it doesn't anthologize earlier dances.

Comfort Food
Though Lar Lubovitch’s graceful troupe still performs in offbeat venues, his work is solidly mainstream, disinclined to make waves. By Laura Shapiro for New York Metro

No worship without sacrifice, announced a plaque on the wall at the Washington Square United Methodist Church, a dictum attributed to Gandhi but well suited to the dingy foyer where the line for the sole bathroom was getting longer. Shabby churches, airless sanctuaries awkwardly rigged out as performance spaces, the audience cramped and sweltering but putting up with discomfort for art’s sake—it was 1969 all over again, though I doubt that Lar Lubovitch meant to celebrate the 35th anniversary of his company by schlepping down memory lane in quite this fashion.

Add Lubovitch to Limón. Stir.

by JENNIFER DUNNING
The New York Times

Mr. Lubovitch sees the Limón troupe as "one of the few remaining companies that still possesses the original spirit of what we used to call modern dance" at a time when the emphasis tends to be on technique, speed and abstraction rather than traditional form and message.

From Thea Singer in the Boston Globe:
Quote:
Lubovitch has ambition, not the guts
Choreographer Lar Lubovitch makes intensely musical dances that don't so much spring from their ambitious scores as resonate or keep time to them. And therein lies both the promise and the Achilles' heel of his classically sparked yet idiosyncratically weighted offerings. They have breath and heart, thanks to Lubovitch's genius with structure and the troupe's 14 fabulous dancers, but not enough guts.
