Steps . . . and more steps - Boston Conservatory and BoSoma make dance work hard
Martha Graham’s Steps in the Street doesn’t look anything like a dance of the 21st century, but at the end of Boston Conservatory’s fall program last weekend it fit right in. The audience cheered wildly for the seven-minute dance ....The redoubtable Yuriko, a Martha Graham dancer in the 1940s and now a principal reconstructor of the early Graham works, came to Boston with her daughter Susan Kikuchi to stage the dance.

Is it dance or is it theater?

That’s the central question with Anna Sokolow’s work, and Celebrating Anna, a weekendlong retrospective by Boston Conservatory Dance Theatre, will tackle it head-on.

Last month, students at Boston Conservatory and Boston University paid tribute to two notables of modern dance's second generation in the best possible way: by performing their work. Anna Sokolow, a member of Martha Graham's extraordinary company of women in the 1930s, would have been 100 this year.
