Sponsored by FleetBoston Celebrity Series, the three performances at the Cutler Majestic featured the classical branch of the Trockadero’s extensive repertory, with numbers ranging from the Romantic period (Grand Pas de Quatre) through Imperial Russia (act two of Swan Lake and a pastiche ripped from Raymonda) to the early 20th century (The Dying Swan) and a contemporary throwback (Tarantella).

More than one of the recent US reviews just uses the stage names of the Trocks. The Company does present some problems for critics as there are at least two false names, one male and one female, associated with each dancer and you have to dig around a little for the real names of the performers. However, where they have danced well or very humourously, I can't help thinking that they deserve to have their real names proclaimed - they are all there in the programme.

I agree, Stuart, and I think some reviewers give the diva name of the performer followed by the real name in parentheses. I was happy to note that the Trocks had updated their website since I'd last looked and that each performer in the troupe had their real name, their diva name and their danseur (divo? Devo?) name listed as well. The bios alone make for some amusing reading:

I would love to see their Pina Bausch spoof. I have seen their Merce Cunningham piece, but unlike most of their work, it actually is a Merce dance, which they have permission to perform - hats off to Merce for enjoying a joke at his own expense.

The ballerinas dancing at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts Tuesday night had everything you'd expect: tutus, tiaras, garland headpieces, fake eyelashes, lipstick and eye shadow.

But these ballerinas had something a little extra under their tutus: hairy armpits and, instead of cleavage, dark, curly chest hair.

It was Les Ballets Trocadero De Monte Carlo, an all-male ballet troupe, who sport faux Russian names such as Vera Namethatunenova, Marcia Gertrudes Clubfoot, Nicholas Khachafallenjar and Ida Nevasayneva.
