Bill T. Jones's Lincoln tribute is well-timed

The spirit of Lincoln pervades Jones's new "Another Evening: Serenade/The Proposition," which gets its Boston premiere with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company at the Institute of Contemporary Art next month. The towering figure of the 16th president never actually appears in the hourlong work, but his momentous legacy drives a sprawling exploration of the nature of history, identity, and dislocation.

... It’s Abraham Lincoln who fascinates Jones. With the upcoming 200th anniversary of the 16th president’s birth, scholars have been revisiting the legacy of the man many consider America’s greatest president. Now it’s an artist’s turn.

The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company brings a new work, “Another Evening: Serenade/ The Proposition,” to the Institute of Contemporary Art tonight through Sunday. It’s the first in a planned triptych of pieces focusing on Lincoln’s life.

On the eve of one of the most momentous elections in our nation's history, choreographer Bill T. Jones's new "Another Evening: Serenade/The Proposition" offers a powerful reflection on the very nature of history itself. Performed by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company last night at the Institute of Contemporary Art, the multimedia dance theater work uses the rich legacy of Abraham Lincoln as its foundation.

Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company’s Another Evening: Serenade/The Proposition is an elegant layering of dance, design, music, and words — and like its title, it doesn’t necessarily convey one overall message. Shown last weekend at the Institute of Contemporary Art, the hour-long work is the first in a projected trilogy built around Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial birthday, which will be celebrated next year.
