Agree or disagree with him, like him or dislike him, Lewis Segal's effect on the Southern California dance scene and beyond is undeniable, and undeniably important. The LA Times unfortunately has joined many other newspapers in eliminating its dance critic position entirely.

Yeah, seriously. Can a few ex-jocks instead of the artists for once.

I would have expected better of the LA Times.

The next time someone writes a story speculating on the reasons why a city the size of LA doesn't have a more active arts scene, well, we'll know at least part of the answer -- except, of course, that there won't be anyone left to write the story.

That's the ironic thing: LA does have a very lively arts scene. It's baffling why the LA Times chose to cut the way it does.

It could be that the stuffed suits in the corporate office in Chicago made the decision based on profit margins and other meaningless numbers.

And they wonder why we don't buy their papers.

Hmmm, that is reminiscent of that Robin Williams bit where the football coach is choreographing Swan Lake. Frightening, but could be interesting in a movie concept.
