In a blinding flash onstage, the human versions of the Nutcracker, the Mouse King and the Ballerina were magically replaced by small inanimate dolls. Seated somewhere behind us, a young patron of Oakland Ballet let out a decidedly impressed, "Whoa!"

It's a wonderful thing to watch a piece of theater inspire awe, and the warmly enthusiastic audience was certainly awed at the Oakland Ballet Company's "Nutcracker," which opened its six-performance run at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland on Friday.

I had thought it was silly that I go across the bay each year to see SF Ballet Nutcracker but don't see my local company. But since I have special needs due to health condition, I needed to call the theater first to be sure I could be accommodated. I got voice mail hell, five different automated messages, then got transferred to someone's machine. I left message with home & work # and said I could not go to the performance without getting information I needed. No one called. I'm disappointed I did not see it, but I am glad to know that Oakland Ballet is on sound enough financial footing to be able to blow off a customer.
