F/T Technical Director
Summary:
Chen Dance Center (est. 1978) is seeking a full-time Technical Director to serve as the head of all productions and manage all of our technical operations, including managing events in our black box theater, coordinating technical elements for our touring productions and residencies, and coordinating the Company¡¦s New York Season. The Technical Director should have experience in all aspects of technical theater including basic set construction, lighting and sound technology. Interest and knowledge of projection and video design is very helpful and candidate should have some scenic and lighting design experience.
Responsibilities:
A. Production/Events:
Chen Dance Center (CDC) consists of three affiliates: H.T. Chen & Dancers, its dance troupe; CDC Theater, its black box theater; and CDC School, its weekend arts school. Most Company productions and events will take place at CDC Theater.
The Technical Director:
Works on all CDC activities, including performances, workshops, events, and productions of the Company on site and while on tour.
Is responsible to coordinate all CDC technical aspects of production, including lighting, sound, and video.
Manages and coordinates all aspects of CDC tour preparation, including coordinating all venues, gathering technical specifications and communicating CDC technical requirements, coordinating tech schedules, supervising load-in and technical rehearsals, and in some situations becoming the lighting supervisor.
Is responsible for all technical aspects of CDC production, including lighting, sound, and video.
Maintains and makes basic repairs on CDC lighting, sound and video equipment.
Provides technical direction and support for all CDC dance program events, presentations, and CDC non-program use of dance facilities and equipment.
Negotiates and executes all artistic and production contracts for CDC, including the review and approval of technical requirements for all users, and ensures that these approved requirements are fulfilled.
Supervises outside lighting designers to whom CDC provides production services.
Organizes tech booth.
Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.
B. Lobby Display:
CDC uses monitors in its hallway lobby to update staff and audiences on news. Maintaining and updating information for these monitors is crucial.
The Technical Director:
Uses computer programs to set up visual displays on monitors (i.e. Powerpoint, Video).
Is able to incorporate information from staff into visual displays.
Maintains and updates information for the monitor.
C. Instruction:
Theater crew should be trained to work in CDC¡¦s black box theater. Classes in lighting design and stagecraft are occasionally provided to students.
The Technical Director:
Trains tech crews to work in CDC¡¦s blackbox theater.
Organizes and teaches a workshop course in lighting design and stagecraft to students.
Supervises and advises students.
Qualifications:
Education & Training:
Bachelor of Fine Arts in technical theater or relevant professional experience is required.
Experience:
Significant background in dance lighting and video projection is required. Experience as a teaching artist is preferred.
Knowledge:
Must have thorough knowledge of stage management and working knowledge of sound and video. Knowledge of a wide range of lighting control and dimming equipment, theatrical lighting fixtures, cables and accessories, sound mixers and recording devices, computer light controllers is required. Knowledge of digital and analog video recording equipment, and linear and nonlinear video editing consoles is recommended. Facility in a variety of computer applications is required, including VectorWorks, Photoshop and other publishing programs, video editing software, MS Office suite.
Other:
Requires strong artistic, technical, administrative, and organizational skills; the ability to interact effectively with and clearly communicate information to a wide range of persons, both within the organization and without; the ability to respond to numerous projects concurrently, establishing priorities and responding positively, effectively, and quickly to continually shifting priorities and needs. Also requires a high level of creativity and the flexibility to respond to the creative work of others.
