UWM dance showcase to focus on identity

The dance department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has tailored its Master of Fine Arts program to the needs and ambitions of mid-career dancers and choreographers.

They come to UWM for intensive summer sessions and spend the rest of the year going about their business as dance professionals, often in New York.

EDGARTOWN, Mass., Aug. 22 — The best-kept secret in American dance may be a small-scale summer ballet program here on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. For the third year Ethan Stiefel, an American Ballet Theater principal, and a number of colleagues have coached a handful of students through four weeks of class and rehearsal. Thursday night, as in previous years, their work will culminate in a performance at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center in Oak Bluffs.

Ballet changed my life: Billy who?

This is not a vehicle for wannabes desperate for their 15 minutes of fame - neither are the young people chosen, Pop Idol-style, via a series of humiliating auditions. Rather, these youngsters have been selected for the scheme by their local councils in Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell and Wolverhampton. Ballet Hoo! is being run in conjunction with Youth at Risk, a charity that specialises in the care and rehabilitation of troubled children. A network of 200 voluntary life coaches is available 24 hours a day to help the youngsters, who are aged between 14 and 19, through this highly demanding programme.

In trying to come to terms with Mr. Smith’s death, Ms. Meredith has created a dance in his memory. A work for two men and two women, “Exit: An Inquiry,” will be presented Dec. 5 to 10 as part of Dance Adelphi, the semiannual showcase for students in the university dance program, where Ms. Meredith has taught since 2001.
