Danville Ballet closes

WALNUT CREEK - Even though Rebecca Crowell is sad to close the doors of her beloved Danville Ballet Company after 23 years due to high rent, she isn't giving up on promoting the arts.

In fact, prepare to see a lot more of Crowell as she steps into many roles promoting the arts in various ways with Diablo Ballet and Walnut Creek's Civic Arts Education.

In her role as development associate for Diablo Ballet, Crowell, who operated the Danville dance school for 23 years, hopes to create arts awareness through a number of activities including fund-raising parties.

Sad news yes, but in this time of parents and children having so many options for activity not a surprise. Plus, Danville Ballet mainly offered classes of a "balletic" nature. Most schools that are surviving offer tap, jazz and hip hop in addition to a ballet division with adult ballet, yoga and pilates mat classes rounding things out.

My daughter has studied at two schools in the bay area and both offered a wide curriculmn.

I wonder if it is even possible to operate a dance school sucessfully on ballet only?

Well it is possible but it is becoming more and more difficult. Everyone leads such busy lives and want their children to do everything that invariably a school will be sought that offers everything under one roof and on the same day if possible. That means that most likely even a ballet school that has an impeccable reputation will struggle.

Don't get me wrong a lot of schools that offer a wide variety of subjects are very good but unfortunately quality is dropping behind convenience in a lot of dance tuition decisions.
