Elisa Monte Dance
Season to include:
"Days Residue," "Volkmann Suite," "Shattered"
and the world premiere of "Hardwood"

The internationally acclaimed Elisa Monte Dance will perform a distinctive
season including the world premiere of "Hardwood" as well as major revivals
of "Days Residue," "Volkmann Suite," "Shattered" when the company returns to
New York City's Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue) Tuesday, September 19th
(7:30PM) through Sunday September 24th. With 25 years of rich history, Elisa
Monte's continues to illustrate her intimate connection with many of the
century's greatest masters such as Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey and Agnes
deMille, as well as transform and pass on their distinctive techniques to
the next generation of dancers. The season showcases Ms. Monte's unique
capacity to combine a wide range of dynamic modern styles and her commitment
to creative collaboration by introducing composers to the dance world
through the use of their work and commissioning new music for contemporary

The pulse of composer John King's music is at the center of the new dance
"Hardwood." The work's male and female quartets travel and coalesce during
the often anarchic and intricate partnering of this 25-minute piece. Both
physical and visceral qualities inform 'Hardwood,' which incorporates the
music's imagery and transforms it into a work that is physical and playful
while contrasting the differing energies of the male and female groups.

Monte's powerful "Days Residue" (2000) with rhythmic music by Slovakian
composer Vladimir Godar focuses on the familiar daily occurrences that are
used in working through our personal dreams. Freud called the myriad sounds,
thoughts, images and experience ---"the day's residue"----the elements from
which our nightly dreams are made. Eight dancers pattern through complex and
intricate staging with swirling long full skirts of color and cascading

Capturing the sensuality and warmth of photographer Roy Volkmann's
extraordinary dance photography and the music of Michael Nyman, "Volkmann
Suite" (1997) focuses on Ms. Monte's inspiration to reverse the traditional
relationship between photographer and choreographer. Developed out of a
photo-shoot and composed by blending together a series of photographic
moments, three dancers move organically as an entwined whole. With a series
of "picture-perfect" moments, the work combines startling postures with
primal configurations creating singular feats of precision and physical

"Shattered" (2001) is a fast and furious piece set to the powerhouse music
of Michael Gordon. Choreographed for the entire company, the work captures
the essence and energy of the music while highlighting the company's agility
and lighting speed with tour-de-force intensity. "Life holds the unexpected.
Embrace it and be strengthened"---Elisa Monte.

The company will feature Joe Celej, Lanette Costas, Matthew Fisher, Fabrice
Lamego, Karen More, Tiffany Rea and Andrew Zachery. Sets and lighting
designed by Clifton Taylor.

Supporters of Elisa Monte Dance include The Harkness Foundation for Dance,
the Hayes Foundation, the Klingenstein Foundation, the Lila Acheson Wallace
Theater Fund and The New York State Council on the Arts.
