Dancers swinging into competition

The American Classic Balboa Championships will take place this weekend as well and will include competitors from 33 states and 10 countries. There, pairs will dance as a panel of judges determines the best of floor in pro and amateur competitions. The judges - instructors from throughout the country - will grade the dancers on their timing, teamwork and technique. Balboa-style swinging derives its name from the Balboa Peninsula in Southern California, where the dance originated in the 1930s.
