The Nuova Euroballetto dance company to debut at Ancona’s Experimental Theater

Nuova Euroballetto will make its debut at the Experimental Theater in Ancona at 9
p.m. on June 28th, with a performance of The Earthly Angel, a ballet created by
Marco Realino, the group’s founder and director.

The ensemble recently moved its headquarters to Ancona, in the Marches
Region, with the intent of identifying itself as a regional company.

The Earthly Angel, a one-act piece lasting an hour and twenty minutes,
dates from 2000. It was inspired by Fabrizio De André’s 1970 record
album La Buona Novella, which the popular Italian singer and composer
drew from the apocryphal gospels. The company has maintained the ballet
in its repertory since them, and its performances have always reaped
success. Last year, for instance, it played to full houses for a whole
week at Rome’s Teatro Greco.

Marco Realino, like De André before him, studied the gospels at length
to prepare his ballet, which focuses on the female characters,
especially Mary. De André’s songs alternate with spoken texts by Serena
Damiani and additional music composed by Federico Fernandina. The work
starts and ends with Giovanna Famulari’s cello solos, played in the
dark. The dance numbers, rather circumscribed, serve the music; more
than actually telling a story, they describe its essence in an abstract
manner. The steps are discrete and introverted, and the pain of the
events is restrained. Like the album that inspired it, this ballet is
bound to stimulate discussion and meditation. Marco Realino’s verve will
surely open the doors of the Ancona stage to everyone’s advantage.
