Welcome, latinsolvero! I haven't seen much discussion of Latin music or dancing for quite awhile on this forum, but maybe that'll change.

I haven't been dancing for some years, and I'm not familiar at all with recent groups, so I'm not a good person discuss this subject with. However, for what it's worth, I really like the first merengue group I ever heard, Los Sabrosos del Merengue. But probably the greatest single merengue I ever heard was at a live concert with Oscar D'Leon. He started with a salsa song, then started speeding it up until it changed into merengue. It was really exciting, and the band was great.

From Cate McQuaid in the Boston Globe:
Feeling the heat and light - Exhibit details the rich history of merengue
"¡Merengue!" paints a vivid social history of a music that has fueled passion; it also charts a bit of art history, from the storytelling strains of the 1930s through modernism and the more subversive elements of contemporary art.
More from the Globe article

For info on the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists which is showing the exhibit, as well as an example of the art, see the museum's web site.
