Walnut Creek explores options for Lesher Center

By Brooke Bryant

WALNUT CREEK - A proposal for the city to relinquish control of operations at the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts is getting fresh attention.

But city officials aren't rushing to hand over the reins any time soon.

"Somebody has got to appear that has a much stronger base of financial support than anybody who's on the scene right now," said Gary Pokorny, the city's Arts, Recreation and Community Services director. "But it's something to be open to, something to consider."

The idea, which got some attention last year as a recommendation from the city's Arts Vision Task Force, resurfaced recently in a report by the Stanford Alumni Consulting Team. Advocates say the change could make it easier to attract bigger and better acts.

Any input from our East Bay members? Will this effect Diablo Ballet at all?
