I am just curious......why isn't Aby Stafford dancing more soloist roles?
She is a fine dancer....I could see her dancing Marzipan and Dewdrop, although maybe with more reserve than some of the others cast. Same with Tinsley.....have these two danced these roles previously?

Greetings

Tinsley is dancing Marzipan next week, and has done so before. I have no idea about Abi Stafford, but there are many reasons why a dancer may not appear during all or part of the Nutcracker season - injury, illness, scheduling or guest dancing elsewhere.

Also, NYCB is often uses 'The Nutcracker' as a chance for new corps members to get experience, with more debuts and young dancers in solo roles than in the repetory seasons. With around 46 performances, soloists and principals tend to do fewer performances than corps members, so it's unusual for names to go absent for a week or two.

In this case, I think that Stafford may be dancing elsewhere. She's scheduled to dance in a Nutcracker down in Virginia on Dec. 10 and 11, and may well be guesting elsewhere as well.

Well, what do you know......a lovely mention of Jen Tinsley's lead Marzipan performance at NYCB in todays NYTimes! She took notice of the same qualities of her dancing that I admire as well...... :D

An interesting review...comments on other boards about the same performance - referring to Sylve and Bouder - were much more positive...

George Balanchine's production of "The Nutcracker" is the gold standard, with high-tech stage effects imbued with homespun magic and a believable portrayal of a loving family. The purity of Balanchine's choreography adds to the production, too, from his first-act evocation of the ordered turbulence of a snowstorm to vivid character dances and the pristine classicism of the second act.

Holiday treats on Saturday the 10th - Reichlen's 1st Sugarplum, la Cour's first Cavalier and Peck's first Dewdrop.

And it looks to be a good Nutcracker Season - all the principal men have or are schedule to do a couple Cavaliers (except Millepied who's likely to be in Geneva rehearsing his new Nutcracker) and all of the principal women are dancing (except Kistler and Nichols, who I don't think generally do Nutcrackers anymore):

Three debuts in major roles on Sunday:

Quote:
Among 3 Lead Debuts in a Holiday Perennial, One Sugarplum Sprite

By JENNIFER DUNNING
Published: December 12, 2005

...Ms. Reichlen and the lanky Ask la Cour, new as her Cavalier, are a physically beautiful match. They were also well matched in their complementary partnering, with Mr. la Cour the most gently empathic and anticipatory of squires and Ms. Reichlen glowingly independent. Mr. la Cour has looked gangling and charmingly awkward at times. Here he was the essence of classical nobility, and the two moved with the same billowing appropriation of space.

I saw the same cast reviewed above on Sunday afternoon and was sorely disappointed, particularly with Peck. No, particularly with la Cour. It’s a tough call. However, the kids were killers. So polished. So excited. Eager to steal every scene. Every year they are a joy to watch. Their enthusiasm is contagious to the point where at intermission, you generally see audience kids “practicing” in the aisles. Yesterday, a curly haired little girl gave the 3rd tier boxes a spontaneous vocal rendition of the Snow Flake scene along with a few steps.

Basically, the three leading adults - Reichlen, laCour and Peck - were a disappointment. Reichlen’s upper body looked like she was marking everything. The sagging elbows were most noticeable when she turned her back to walk up stage. And while there were some nice moments - big jumps, rhythmical double pirouettes with a neat finish, wonderful shoulder sits during the PdD - she still moves like she hasn’t grown into her long legs. Watching laCour, I kept asking myself “Why is this person a soloist?” Tentative, legs unstretched, feet that looked partially flexed when ascending an assemble. Peck, as Dewdrop, gave a manic performance. At the beginning of the solo where Dew starts off with the stationary bourees, she did them like a fullback at the line of scrimmage. Again, the upper body destroyed the performance - instead of it being the antithesis of what was going on with the feet and legs, Peck used her upper body to punctuate - the way the Trocks do in their performances.

The soloists were well rehearsed and for the most part were first rate - especially Craig Hall as Candy Cane and Austin Laurent as Tea. I think someone near me was snoozing during Coffee’s solo, but I thought that Rebecca Krohn was believable and well rehearsed. The corps in Snow and Waltz was super. Hats off to the dancers for maneuvering through the big blizzard during Snow.

I agree with Poohtunia but I think Reichlin gave an appropriate performance for the occasion: NYCB (who are not known for coaching) + Balanchine Nutcracker (which is probably the least magical production I've seen of all the major ones) + a matinee. She is after all still only a soloist.

I have to admit I dozed through parts of the choreography -- except for the kids, nothing much captivated me about this production. I remember having the same problem at OBT's performance a couple years ago of the same Balanchine production.
