Just about every ballet shoe company makes canvas slippers...

Kate, are they completely free of animal byproducts? Including the soles?*

* Without meaning to open the argument as to whether or not animals have soles. . . .

You're right...

I suspect that true vegan ballet slippers do not exist. For one, I'm not sure what else besides leather would work for the soles (on the outside of the shoes), and beyond that there's probably animal products or animal proteins in the glue used to put the shoes together.

Even if the company says it's animal product free, there might still be animal proteins involved somewhere in glue, dye, thread etc. It depends on what you consider "animal".

Trust, me you'd be surprised where animal protiens show up...you can get chicken with pork in it and vice versa. But that's another issue.

The only "vegan" shoe I have heard of is the Schactner pointe shoes, made in Austria--but unfortunately they are quite difficult to get here in the US. When I used to get them they were wholly made of manmade products including the sole which was an interesting kind of rubberized material and polyurethane to harden them, so they do smell a little odd and tend to have a kind of flat box. They balance well though and last FOREVER.

You used to be able to order them via The Dance Works:

But I don't know if they still carry them.

Here's the sizing guide for the shoes

If you're looking for flat shoes you may be out of luck.

You can check out Vegan Wares. Their distributor has discontinued their line of vegan ballet slippers, so they are discounting what is left in stock. Note that the company is based on Australia.

Also, Grisko says they can make vegan slippers.

And one more option:
