Ballet in four movements
Music: Serenade for Strings in C, Op.48 (1880) by Peter Llyitch Tchaikovsky
Choreography: George Balanchine (1935)
Serenade is a milestone in the history of dance. It is the first original ballet Balanchine created in America. The ballet is performed by 28 dancers in blue costumes before a blue background. Serenade has four movements –“Sonatina”, “Waltz”, ”Russian Dance” and “Elegy”. The last movements reverse the order of Tchaikovsky’s score, ending the ballet on a note of sadness.
George Balanchine’s ballet is called “Music Ballet” because of its abstraction and just like music flowing on the stage. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His creations for the ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty.
The Ballet of George Balanchine Serenade is presented by arrangement with The George Balanchine Trust and has been produced in accordance with the Balanchine Style® and Balanchine Technique® service standards established and provided by the Trust
