I'm trying to get some information together on this theme. Can you help me with examples of the use of Arvo Pärt's music in dance, with as much of the information as you know, please:

Title of dance work
choreographer
Title of music
Company(s) who have performed the work
Appx length
Appx dates
If you saw it, your thoughts on the work

To start the ball rolling:

"Unrest"
Richard Alston
Fratres
Rambert Dance company
15 minutes
2001

Hasn't stayed in my mind apart from the use of the music. Elegant and restrained said one review from the time.

***************************

"Myrrh and Cinnamon"
Guy Weizman
Fur Alina
Club Guy & Roni
60 minutes
2005

A super expressive work from a technically strong company. Based on "The song of Songs", Part's music is only a small part of the entire score, but his music inspired the choreogrpher to find other spiritual music from Estonia for the remainder of the work.

****************************

"Tabula Rasa"
Ohad Naharin
"Tabula Rasa"
Many companies incl NDT and Hubbard St
20 min
1988

The music has a fast section and a beautiful slow section. The two sections of the music and the dance do not fit together easily, IMHO.

Any others, please?

I'm sure I have seen works with Arvo Pärt music, Nacho Duato's?, Tony Fabre's?, one of his dancers ???.

As soon as I have a bit more time I search and let you know.

Please do, Carolina. Looks as though no one else has ever seen a dance work with a score by Arvo Pärt. Please prove me wrong!

Didn't Ulysses Dove make a beautiful ballet for the Royal Swedish Ballet using Part's music? It was on PBS a few years ago. I can't find any information regarding it on the net. :(

There was a performance by Club guy & roni (Neatehrlands) and Estonian NYYD Ensemble in February 2005 in Kanuti Gildi SAAL (Tallinn, Estonia), where the latter played alive Pärt's "Aliinale". The performance was called Myrrh and Cinnamon.

You can find more information on Kanuti Gildi SAAL webpage.

Thanks for that info, kurinuku. I found the description very intriguing:

Quote:
'Myrrh and Cinnamon' is a dance concert based on the Song of Songs by Salomon, one of the most poetic and intriguing chapters of the bible which supplies an almost limitless ground for interpretation. The compositions are by the Estonian composers Arvo Pärt, Lepo Sumera, Märt-Matis Lill and Erkki-Sven Tüür.

I've seen several - he's big at NYCB - Christopher Wheeldon has used Part music in some recent ballets::

AFTER THE RAIN

Music: Tabula Rasa (1977) (First movement - "Ludus") and Spiegel Im Spiegel (1978)
by Arvo Pärt
Choreography © Christopher Wheeldon
Premiere: January 22, 2005, New York State Theater, New York, NY
Original cast: Wendy Whelan, Sofiane Sylve, Maria Kowroski, Jock Soto, Edwaard Liang, Ask la Cour

LITURGY

Music by Arvo Part
Choreography by Christopher Wheeldon
Premiere: May 31, 2003, New York City Ballet, New York State Theater
Original cast: Wendy Whelan, Jock Soto
Average length of ballet: 11 min.

One of my teachers in NY also used Avro Part music in a piece for one of the ballet school's recitals.
