I made a joke about it in another forum, but I've been thinking about this and I am now actually wondering:

Can we create a list of companies not currently in turmoil or trouble?

Situation in the UK

Royal Ballet: excellent shape
Birmingham Royal Ballet: good/very good shape
Northern Ballet Theatre: very good shape
Scottish Ballet: very good shape and gathering strength

That's 4 out of 5 for the major UK ballet companies. English National Ballet's AD has just resigned and financial problems are never far away for them, but it is not in crisis.

Taken overall, that's all rather impressive for the situation in the UK.

An afterthought: Three years ago the situation was VERY different when all were in turmoil apart from Birmingham, with four AD resignations with various clouds hanging around. So there is hope.

Ooh, er... it depends on what you mean by turmoil or trouble, doesn't it? Financial-wise or management-wise? Also it all depends on degrees and how much is made public, right? Even some of the UK companes that Stuart points out is in excellent shape have been the source of some interesting news in private quarters.

Depending on who you ask, the major US companies are either in excellent shape or have had to make cuts. Or maybe they are in excellent shape because they made cuts.

Nevertheless, it is indeed not business as usual for most companies but then again is "usual" defined by the heydays of the dot com boom?
