Cal Perf's season full of reasons to celebrate

By Sue Gilmore

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

CALIFORNIA Performances hits the big century mark with its 2005-06 season, announced Tuesday in Berkeley; and the partying will go on all concert-year long, with such high-octane celebrants as mezzo-sopranos Cecilia Bartoli and Anne Sofie von Otter, soprano Deborah Voigt, comedian John Cleese and a double bill featuring jazz greats Ramsey Lewis and Dave Brubeck.

Adding frosting to the cake for the nonstop birthday party is the happy coincidence of several other milestones observed during the new season -- singer Arlo Guthrie will be serving up anything you want, for instance, at the 40th anniversary celebration of "Alice's Restaurant." That landmark work of the '60s will be performed in full Oct. 30 with Guthrie's son Abe on keyboard duty.

Cal Performances traces its lineage to a 1906 appearance at the Greek Theatre by actress Sarah Bernhardt. Proceeds from her performance in the title role of Racine's "Phèdre" went to help victims of the San Francisco earthquake, which had struck a month earlier.
