I knew many US companies will be starting later next season, some as late as November or December, kicking off with "Nutcracker" but it seems that this is more of a norm. I can't find a major company that is kicking off its regular season in August. It looks like one or two might be starting in late September but so many are starting later.
Here's an excerpt from a press release from Ballet West that seems to typify the reasoning:

Salt Lake City, Utah – Ballet West today announced a new season schedule that is unprecedented in Ballet West's 42-year history. Ballet West will open its 2005-06 season with the ballet that has long been synonymous with Ballet West – The Nutcracker, which will run from Dec. 9-31 at the Capitol Theatre. The season will continue with two magnificent ballets, Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake, concluding with a triple-bill of extraordinary masterworks.
"Our new season strategy is two-fold," said Johann Jacobs, Ballet West Executive Director. "First, we want to be fiscally responsible, and present ballets when the members of our public want to see them. Second, we want to present exciting ways of attracting new subscribers in order to continue to grow our subscriber base."
