I reviewed the ballet "Legend of the Great Archer" when it was premiered in Hong Kong in late March.

I was quite impressed by this ballet by Natalie Weir when it was premiered last year. It is one of the few successful new ballets commissioned by artistic director Stephen Jefferies in the last eight years.

It hasn't been posted in this thread yet. The company announced in November that they are looking for a new artistic director to replace Stephen Jefferies when his contract expires in June 2006.

China Children and Teenagers' Fund and Beijing Daily are sponsoring three goodwill performances of the full-length ballet "Legend of the Great Archer" by the Hong Kong Ballet at Beijing's Poly Theatre on January 3 to 5.

Premiering in May 2004, the ballet was created by Stephen Jefferies, the former Royal Ballet's principal dancer and currently artistic director of Hong Kong Ballet, to celebrate the company's 25th anniversary.

I was told by a reliable source in Beijing that the company's performances there of Stephen Jefferies' Chinese ballet "Legend of the Great Archer" in January did not go down well at all with the Chinese audience. On the first night, nearly half the audience left after the first interval.

The bad weather conditions caused by the snow didn't help, but I was told that the Beijing audience wasn't all that impressed by this Westernised version of a Chinese legend, and probably prefer the National Ballet of China's more authentic productions of Chinese legends, e.g. "Raise the Red Lantern" which was shown in London last season, "Yellow River" etc.
