I’ve never seen this ballet live, but have the video of Vladimir Vasiliev in the title role dancing at the Roman amphitheatre in Verona together with a cast of mainly Italian dancers. With his blond hair and Russian features, Vasiliev makes an unlikely Zorba at first glance, but he is actually quite outstanding in the depth of feeling he puts across. He must have been close to 50 when the video was made, but he was still fantastic dancing with a speed that many younger dancers could only envy.<P>The Theodorakis music is basically the same as the film but extended and added to for the purposes of dance and the composer also conducts the orchestra. I can understand critical comments being a bit mixed on this one, I suppose it depends on how much you enjoy Greek music and familiarity with the book/film. Being a great lover of Greece, Zorba always conjures up memories of old men getting up and dancing in the Greek tavernas, totally oblivious of their surroundings and lost in the movement of the dance. I always found watching them a deeply moving experience.<BR>
