Many thanks observer for this review of the two premieres. I'm delighted they went so well.

I was just looking at the photo above (not immediately above, but the little one above that), of Vladimir and his wife, and remembering discussions about the arabesque penche position elsewhwere on criticaldance.com. I think the dancers' lines are beautiful in that photo. I like the line that goes from his back thigh and seems to continue in the line of her lifted leg. I don't think her position would be as graceful if she were in a "6 o'clock" penche.

Unfortunately in the near future our company will not go to USA, so, come better you to us, if you have interest.

In case you're tempted Matthew, there are easy boat and air connections to Tallinn from Stockholm and Helsinki. Perhaps a Baltic tour including Riga and Vilnius is an idea. Paris, Barcelona, Prague and London will be much the same in the future, but the smaller, beautiful Baltic capitals may be overrun with tourists in 5 years.

Marina Chirkova

I was lucky to see the Estonian National Ballet's "Swan Lake" in Malmö, Sweden, last night (April 2). It is an impressing production. Fine sets and really wonderful costumes. Choreography clean and fresh.

Marina Chirkova as Odette/Odile and Vladimir Arhangelski as the Prince are pure classical Kirov dancers, a joy to watch. The whole troupe held a surprisingly high standard.

I am looking forward to the rest of the performances on April 3-6.

Jorgen, many thanks for your comments on the touring performance. I can understand that you were impressed with Marina and Vladimir. If you get the chance, Kaie Kõrb as Odette-Odile/Ottilie is also well worth seeing.

I remember an Estonian designer telling me how the costume department at the Opera House maintains a very high standard, both in the interpretation of outline designs and their execution. The productions I have seen support this view.

I saw all five performances in Malmö and I can only confirm my first night's very positive impression.

Kaie Körb danced second and fourth nights. I loved Marina Chirkova, but I think I liked Kaie Körb even more. So subtle arms and hands, very dramatic and in total control.

The week was more or less sold out and I hope to see them back soon.

Thanks, Jorgen, for maintaining ballerinagallery.com. I visit it frequently. Among the new additions, I especially like the portrait of Marina Chirkova (such pretty eyes!) and Kaie Korb as Anna Karenina (at least, it looks as if it should be Anna Karenina - the photo with the hat).
