Ensemble Group by Robert Dawson Scott for The Times.
THE return of Norman Douglas’s ensemblegroup, precious typography aside, is a cause for rejoicing. Before it appeared, two years ago, the idea a contemporary Scottish dance company could take on the open prairies of Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, one of the widest proscenium arches in Europe, was openly ridiculed.
But the doubters were routed and although Douglas’s ad hoc troupe does not yet have the funding he deserves, here he is back with 12 fine dancers hand-picked from around the world, three new pieces from choreographers as varied as Christopher Hampson, Toni Mira and Cathy Marston, and a duet that Douglas himself made for Edinburgh’s Dance Base only last year.
